Are you the one who is saying SEO is dead? Have you read somewhere that SEO is dead?
Recently I met a renowned founder of a renowned startup and we were discussing about the internet marketing ideas and plans. How can Search Engine Optimization help them and how can we cope up the changes happening day by day in the world of internet marketing.
Then he sarcastically asked me, “Why you have chosen a field which has no future and diminishing day by day?” He added SEO is dead.
How can a Search Engine Optimizer hear that SEO is dead? My reply to him was alike, “SEO can never die. As long as Google exists and people are searching on it to get their queries answered, SEO will exist.”
This particular question pinches me like hell and I was thinking that great people with a little knowledge are making critical impinges about SEO. There are about 10,300,000 results for this keyword. Spammers are creating content against SEO to get huge traffic for this competitive keyword. So I decided to write this post to explain “Why SEO is not Dead?” so that people must understand well about this mandatory field otherwise they can loose huge amount of hits and of course money.

I am parting this post into three parts namely or three eras of SEO ie Historic SEO, SEO of Updates and Modern SEO. Let us move to the first phase of SEO.
(1) Historic SEO
It was the time when the search engines were evolving. Search Engines do not have such strong algorithms to define a better search results. Search engines used to index web pages and show the search results on the basis of first come first serve basis. There was time when there were no real logics to serve the search queries. We are talking about the time of 2000. The ranking factors seems to be funny like ranking on alphabetically basis, number of pages in a website, exact match domains and others.
Then the era changed and external links came into play. Search engine becomes smart and they changed their algorithms and search results were according to the number of external links or backlinks. It does not matter for a search engine whether it is a quality backlink or not. They just see the numbers.
I know newbies must be thinking that whether this kind of era ever existed or I am joking? This kind of era really existed and I have experienced that myself. I myself has ranked my first blogspot blog ie Cancer Research Centre just by creating huge backlinks in few weeks. It was really a great time and I enjoyed doing so.
Then Google became smarter and in 2011 it started adding certain filters to the search methods and updated its algorithm. This led to the beginning of the era of SEO updates. At this time many SEO revolutionaries quoted that SEO is dead.
(2) SEO of Updates
The smarter Google understand that the websites with thin content and low quality links are disrupting the quality results which leads to poor user experience.
(a) Google Panda Update:
In 2011 Google rolled out its first update in February 2011 which is known as Panda Update. This update led to major search result shuffling. This update was related to content in which Google has filtered all the low quality, duplicate and thin content websites. This is time when content role actually came into play. It became difficult for the spammers who with a little content on their pages were trying to outrank quality pages. At this time again roars were there in online marketing industry that SEO is dead.
(b) Google Penguin Update:
In April 2012 Google again came forward with new algorithm which is popularly known as Google Penguin Update where a strict action was taken against the websites who have bought low quality cheap links. Sites with bad backlinks were displaced from the top rankings and were warned to remove the bad links through Google Link Disavow Tool. This was the time of one more major Search Results shift which has rolled even big big companies and that was a major loss to the companies who were dependent on online revenue. Again critics get a chance to condemn Search Engine Optimization and they again said SEO is Dead.
(c) Google EMD Update:
Google EMD Update is expanded as Exact Match Domain update in which all the websites with domain name as keyword were dropped from rankings. It was introduced by Google in September 2012. The sites who update their site with quality data survived and other dipped badly. Again rumors were flagged and people mourned on the death of SEO.
(d) Google Hummingbird Update:
Google is becoming smarter and smarter day by day. In September 2013 Google come up with its smart search concept in which Google started giving emphasis to websites who provide more meaning to the keyword. If we type “search e” it shows meaningful search options to choose from the drop down. The sites with same meaning are ranked higher. The led to the beginning of Smart Search Concept and people again mourned and you better know for what.
(e) Google Pigeon Update:
Google Pigeon update is related to the local search results and in July 2014 Google updated its search algo to provide more centric local results. It was based on several factors such as location, and local ranking parameters. Again a time for critics to dance on passing away off SEO.
(f) Google Mobile Friendly Update:
Google in April 2015 has update the most significant update in which mobile friendly websites were given more preferences in the search engine results. This not only revolutionized the search market but also forced designing gurus to change their designing strategy. It marked the beginning of responsive templates, themes and mobile friendly website designs. It gave a chance to traditional SEOs to condemn SEO once again and they quoted “SEO is Dead” to gain attention of audience.
There were news that Google has updated its search algorithm for 60-80 times in a month. The updates are refining day by day and will continue to roll out. Let us move to the SEO that is working now a days.
(3) Modern or Realistic SEO
Modern Day Search Engine Optimizers need to move one step ahead from all these updates. The SEOs now a days has to keep each and every thing crystal clear and genuine to rank in Search Engine Giant.
The era is more of presenting the relevant and realistic results to the user. If you provide your user quality, then he will return back to you directly without the help of search engine. This very thing is counted and added as a great ranking factor. This is because a search engine knows that if a user is returning then that page is worth reading. Google is looking for the web pages which can actually provide value to the readers. The content must be engaging and sharable.

I have already mentioned in starting that till the Google is alive, till then SEO will thrive. This is a bitter and utter truth.

Thus ranks responsive sites higher than non responsive websites. Now think whether Search Engine Optimization is dead or alive.
I think these proofs are sufficient to remove the scum accumulated in your head against SEO or Search Engine Optimization.
